The Fujairah Half Marathon has just started, with the starting line only a few hundred meters from where I live. Even if the start was 6.30AM, it’s already 35C, and I feel a bit sorry for the athletes. Evans Kiplagat from Kenya is the defending champion. The organisers are offering a $100,000 bonus it the winner beats the current world record. I doubt that will happen with these temperatures.
OK, so here comes the winner: Vincent Cheruyot from Kenya. The winning time of 1 hour 7.04 is impressive with temperatures of 35C this early in the morning.
Vincent Cheruyot is being interviewed by local media.
The women’s race was won by Anani Asafa from Ethiopia at 1 hour 18:48. If feel it’s a real shame that so few people showed up at this Half Marathon here in Fujairah. As the athletes are crossing the finishing line, there are basically only athletes and volunteers milling around. There are very few local spectators. When do you see world-class athletes like this at the Fujairah Corniche?
Sadly, Fujairah is still asleep.
